What is Horizontal Direction Drilling?
Horizontal Directional Drilling involves the use of specialized drilling and support equipment to install pipes and services without having to excavate through roads, rivers, dams and other structures. HDD is suitable for installing a wide variety of pipe types, sizes and arrangements. From small telecommunications ducts to large diameter enveloper's, water, gas, sewer and other services. HDD can also be utilized for installing bundles or multiple pipes housed within a single bore hole with arrangements from 2 pipes through to 10+ pipes able to be installed in a single hole.
1. Pilot Bore
The HDD Process starts by establishing existing utilities and underground obstacles, required depths for new services allowing a profile and alignment to be created. From there a suitably sized drilling rig is placed on site, and a pilot hole is drilled from the launch pit to the receiving pit. The drill bit is guided using one of several available tracking systems, with steering available in any direction to navigate and avoid subsurface obstacles.
2. Reaming
Once the pilot hole is complete, a reamer is attached to the drill string. This allows the bore hole to be upsized larger in increments to achieve the required hole size for the product pipe. Reamers are available in a host of configurations to suit all ground conditions.
3. Cleaning/Gauging
Once all reaming passes are complete, a cleaning barrel is attached and used to remove any remaining drill cuttings and gauge the borehole is the correct size and will house the product being installed adequately.
4. Pullback
The final step in the installation process is to attach the product being installed to the drill string via a swivel to stop it rotating with the string, and use the drilling rig to pull the product into the hole, completing the installation.
